Big Tobacco Exposed: A Legacy of Darkness

1) The Body Count (ongoing, preventable)
Tobacco isn’t just a bad habit, it’s a carefully engineered system of death.
For decades, Big Tobacco has knowingly profited off pain, addiction, and rejection, while deceiving the public about the true cost.
Every year, tobacco kills more than 480,000 Americans and over 8 million people worldwide, including innocent lives lost to secondhand smoke. That’s one in five U.S. deaths that are avoidable, preventable, and fueled by corporations that have long denied the truth.

2) “Designed for Addiction” (engineering dependence)
Internal records prove cigarettes were designed to keep people hooked: additives, filter tricks, and chemical tweaks that boosted nicotine delivery while executives denied its addictiveness. Even Philip Morris finally admitted nicotine was addictive in 2000 - after decades of deception.

Internal documents and analyses show the industry engineered cigarettes (e.g., filter ventilation, additives, ammonia “free-base” nicotine) to increase nicotine delivery and keep people hooked - while long claiming otherwise. assets.tobaccofreekids.org+2PMC+2

Even the industry itself eventually conceded: Philip Morris publicly acknowledged nicotine addictiveness in 2000 after decades of denial. PMC
3) Targeting the Vulnerable (menthol & youth)
From cartoon mascots to menthol campaigns, Big Tobacco has relentlessly targeted the young, the poor, and Black communities. Menthol cigarettes, marketed as “smooth,” made it easier to start and harder to quit. To this day, federal bans on menthol are delayed, even though lives hang in the balance.

Menthol policy has stalled: proposed federal bans on menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars were withdrawn in Jan 2025, despite strong public-health backing and heavy disproportionate harm to Black Americans. Public Health Law Center+1
4) Secondhand Smoke (no safe dose)
There is no safe level of exposure. Even brief encounters with secondhand smoke can trigger strokes, heart disease, and asthma attacks in children. Over 1.6 million non-smokers die each year because of other people’s cigarettes.

There is no safe level of secondhand smoke; even brief exposure harms vessels and can cause heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer in nonsmokers; it also worsens asthma and infant illness. CDC+1
5) Proven Deception in Court (RICO & the MSA)
In 2006, a U.S. federal court ruled that major tobacco companies violated racketeering laws by deceiving the public about health risks. Earlier, in 1998, the Master Settlement Agreement forced them to pay billions and banned youth-targeted marketing. Yet the lies and lobbying continue.

6) “Sound Science” Tactics (manufacturing doubt)
Why It Matters Now
The playbook hasn’t changed: deny, delay, distract. Whether by stalling menthol bans, pushing flavored products, or muddying science, Big Tobacco thrives when truth stays hidden. But the truth has power—and Jesus came to bring life where death reigns.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” —John 10:10

Freedom from tobacco or vaping doesn’t come from government programs, lawsuits, or corporations that profit either way. Real freedom comes from truth—and from walking with Jesus daily.
I’ve seen it firsthand: people can quit smoking. I DID!
They can quit vaping too!!!
I’ve helped folks do it. It’s not easy—but it is possible when you know your worth in Christ, when you’ve got real support, and when you’re surrounded by people who care more about your soul than your wallet.
